What is a root canal?

A root canal is a procedure that involves the removal of infected or damaged pulp from all the root canals of a tooth. Each canal is then disinfected, cleaned, shaped and filled with a biocompatible material to prevent further infection. This process saves your natural tooth.

Why is it better to see an endodontist than get root canal therapy from my general dentist?

General dentists provide a wide range of dental services and many are also trained to do root canals. After dental school, endodontists receive two or more years of advanced training in diagnosing and treating issues related to the inside of the tooth. We are specialists who focus exclusively on root canals and other endodontic procedures. Accordingly, we have invested in the latest, state-of-the-art technology such as Zeiss surgical microscopes, Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) 3D X-ray and the Sonendo Gentle Wave System. These technologies, which rarely if ever will be found in a general dentist’s office, together with our advanced education and considerable experience in this specialty enable us to provide our patients with the best root canals available, especially in the most complex and difficult cases.

What are the symptoms of a root canal infection?

The symptoms of a root canal infection include severe toothache, sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, swelling and tenderness of the gums, and discoloration of the affected tooth.

What causes a root canal infection?

A root canal infection is caused by the bacteria that enter the pulp of the tooth through a deep cavity, crack or fracture in the tooth, or trauma to the tooth.

Is root canal therapy painful?

Root canal therapy is performed under local anesthesia, and most patients feel little to no pain during the procedure. However, some patients may experience mild discomfort and sensitivity after the procedure, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

How long does a root canal take?

We strive to complete root canal procedures in one 45-60 minute, pain-free appointment. Due to the complexity of a case or for several other other reasons, a second appointment may be necessary to complete treatment.

What is the success rate of root canal therapy?

Root canal therapy has a high success rate, with over 95% of cases being successful. However, the success of the treatment depends on the severity of the infection and the patient’s oral hygiene habits after the procedure.

How long does it take to recover from a root canal?

Most people are able to return to normal activities the same day as their root canal procedure. You may experience some sensitivity in the treated tooth for a few days, but this should subside relatively quickly.

What happens if I don't get a root canal?

If left untreated, an infected or damaged tooth can lead to more serious health issues, including abscesses, bone loss, and even systemic infections.

Why is it better to get root canal therapy than to simply pull the tooth?

It is typically better to get a root canal than to pull a tooth because root canals are designed to save the natural tooth whenever possible. When a tooth is pulled, it can cause a variety of issues with the surrounding teeth and gums, including misalignment and bone loss. In addition, missing teeth can make it difficult to eat and speak properly, and can also affect your appearance.

How do I know if I need a root canal or a different dental treatment?

We have the knowledge, experience and technology to determine for sure whether or not
you need a root canal or any other endodontic treatment. Even if your general dentist refers you to Wells Endodontics for a root canal, we will make our own diagnosis to determine what, if any, endodontic treatment is appropriate. If you don’t need a root canal, or if you need a root canal in a different tooth, we’ll be the first to tell you that!

What can I expect during a root canal procedure?

First, your tooth will be anesthetized so that you will feel no pain during the procedure. As soon as your tooth is numb, a sheet of latex will be placed around it. Next, we will make an opening through the crown of the tooth and remove the infected pulp from the chamber. Then we will disinfect the tooth and clean, shape and fill each individual root canal. Each canal will be filled with a special biocompatible material and a temporary filling will be put in place to restore the tooth’s function – long enough for you to return to your general dentist for final restoration of your tooth.

Is it safe to get a root canal?

Yes, root canals are a safe and effective treatment for addressing issues with the inside of a tooth. The endodontist will take all necessary precautions to ensure that the procedure is as safe and comfortable as possible.
